Anjali (name changed) faced a lot of health issues when pregnant with her second child. Therefore, when she delivered a beautiful, healthy baby girl, she and her family were over the moon. However, after a few months, she started noticing some developmental delays in her baby. For example, at six months old her daughter was not able to hold up her head like babies normally do at that age. After a lot of consultations with multiple doctors, she realized that her daughter was suffering from cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy is a motor disability that affects children. It usually develops due to issues during pregnancy or delivery. It affects the motor and sensory functions of the body. Symptoms may include poor muscle tone, muscle stiffness, uncontrolled movements, and problems with balance, posture, coordination, walking, swallowing, speech, mental retardation, breathing problems, seizures, skeletal deformities, and vision and hearing problems.

“The main reason is the lack of oxygen during delivery or during the last stages of pregnancy”, says Dr. Kiran B Nair, CEO of Vaidya Ayurveda Hospital in Perumbavoor, Kerala. Other reasons include infections during pregnancy or delivery, BP issues, bleeding, and postpartum hemorrhage. It is usually identified after 6 months when the baby shows no neck control or pelvic control and other developmental delays are noted.

At Vaidya Ayurveda Hospital counseling the parents is given as much importance as treating the child. This helps them cope with the situation, sensitizes them about the needs of the child, and teaches them to take care of a child with cerebral palsy.

“Nowadays Pediatric neurologists are themselves recommending Ayurveda to their patients”, says Dr. Kiran. In Ayurveda rehabilitative mode of treatment is followed along with Panchakarma treatments. 30-45 days of treatment at Vaidya Ayurveda Hospital is recommended for a minimum period of 6-7 years. Depending on the severity of the condition and the muscles affected, different combinations of therapy are used.

“Since our daughter was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, we had lost our sleep. She had to be put under sedation”, says Anjali. However, after only 15 days of treatment at Vaidya Ayurveda Hospital, the child was taken off sedation. “We have been able to introduce a regular sleep pattern. Her holding and grasping skills have improved drastically”, says Dr. Kiran.

Dr. Kiran is cautiously optimistic when talking about the success rates of treating children with cerebral palsy. “70-80% recovery is seen in most cases. However, there are some cases where nothing can be done.” As a case in point, he discusses the situation of a two-year-old with microcephaly. “The child had continuous seizures. There was nothing that we could do to help her, other than managing the situation.”

Dr. Kiran is however happy that he and his team at Vaidya Ayurveda Hospital have been able to help a number of children with cerebral palsy live a normal life. With continuous treatment, guidance, and counseling 70-80% of the symptoms related to cerebral palsy can be cured.
